Urumqi

Well here are pictures from my 3 weeks in Urumqi China while I was there giving a Data Warehouse class to Markor Furniture. The class went very well and I had an opertoinity to experience a part of China that most westerners will never see. Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region which is the largest city in China's western interior with a population of about 2.5 million people. Ürümqi has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world as it is about 1,400 miles (2,500 km) from the nearest coastline.

  • The 1st night in Urumqi. The view looking out of my 'hotel' room window.
  • I spent 3 weeks in Urumqi China giving a Data Warehouse for Markor Furnishings.
  • This is the view just to the right when you come out of Markor's building.
  • This is looking back down the street at Markor's building.
  • Everywere you went there would be these statues of dragons.
  • Even in China you can't escape Fast Food. KFC is the largest western fast food chain in China.
  • This is the food market / food street which is around the corner from the Markor's building. At night this is lined with food stalls.
  • Everyware you went there were these little food places that had local ethnic foods.
  • Here is a one of the Kabob vendors. All of the vendors cook over lumps of coal. Everywere you look people cook with coal.
  • This is one of the many delivery carts that are all over China. This one is motorized, but many are just bikes.
  • And yes they have dogs and cats for pets.
  • The architecture on many of the buildings was unusual.
  • Most buildings will have signs in Uyghur, Chinese and then Russian since we are very close to Russia.
  • The 1st full day in Urumqi I seen this little park from my room's window so I grabbed my camera and walked over.
  • It was hard to believe that a little over 2 weeks previous, they had a snow storm. The temperature was about 22 C or 68 F.
  • I thought this was an interesting building which was on the other side of the park. Later, I learned that it was a hotel for many of the visitors visiting from the 'stans'. We were not very far from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan which they just call the ‘stans!
  • While I was at the park I found out that this building is actually a Pigeon house and the people feed the pigeons so they stay there. They were rebuilding the walkways, flower beds, and this small stone platform while I was there. By the end of my 3 weeks everything was finished and the park looked great.
  • As you can see the pigeons are pretty tame.
  • If a pigeon will eat out of your hand you will have good luck. At least that’s what they told me...
