Urumqi

Well here are pictures from my 3 weeks in Urumqi China while I was there giving a Data Warehouse class to Markor Furniture. The class went very well and I had an opertoinity to experience a part of China that most westerners will never see. Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region which is the largest city in China's western interior with a population of about 2.5 million people. Ürümqi has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world as it is about 1,400 miles (2,500 km) from the nearest coastline.

  • On Sunday April 24th, one of my translators for the class, Miki, took me to see the 'Big Buddha' shrine. It's offical name is 'Hongguang shan Buddhist temple'. This is a huge place that is being built by the Chinese government and when it is complete it will be turned into a working Buddhist temple. This picture is of the walk way to enter enter the temple.
  • There are 4 golden statues that guard the entrance to the gates.
  • In the center of the four golden guards is a statue of the Buddha mother.

  • This is looking through the temple arches. You can see the blue construction fencing as they are still working on the site.

  • After passing through the temple arch this is the view. Notice that the Buddha at the bottom is called the 'laughing' Buddha, but the one standing is the real Buddha.
  • Close up of the Smiling Buddha. Notice the carvings of small children playing on it. Also this statue was under construction, just like everything in China.
  • This is a picture of Miki making a wish to Buddha.
  • You would place an incense stick as an offering and then make your wish.
  • More statues line each side of the walk to the Buddha.
  • This gives you and idea of the size of the statue.
  • While I was talking pictures, Miki came up to me with this girl and her mother. She asked me if she could take a picture with me. They don't see many westerners so I guess I was a novelty. I told her she could take a picture with me as long as I could take a picture of her.
  • Another picture that shows it's size.

  • This is one of the smaller private shrines where people can make offerings.
  • They even have Buddha Dog's.
