Urumqi

Well here are pictures from my 3 weeks in Urumqi China while I was there giving a Data Warehouse class to Markor Furniture. The class went very well and I had an opertoinity to experience a part of China that most westerners will never see. Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region which is the largest city in China's western interior with a population of about 2.5 million people. Ürümqi has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world as it is about 1,400 miles (2,500 km) from the nearest coastline.

  • On one side of the shrine is the Drum Tower. For a small fee you could strike the drum. Each of the small circles represent one of the buddhist principles. You were to strike each spot and yell out the meaning of the circle for your wish to come true.

  • On the other side of the temple is the Bell Tower. Her couples could make an offering to Buddha and strike the bell.
  • The position of the hands have a meaning. the Right hand held facing up is a gesture of reassurance, blessing, and protection. "Do not fear." The left hand facing down is fulfilment of all wishes; the gesture of charity.
  • Here is a picture of our driver and Miki. Every place you went we usually had a driver since most Chinese don't own cars.
  • Here is a picture of me with Miki.
  • Here is another picture of me.
  • On our way back to the car people were in the parking lot flying kites. This person had the was flying the kite in all different kind of paterns.
  • After getting back to the Markor offices and my room, I decided to find the entrance to the big park. After checking the map I found an entrance about 1/2 mile from my building. Once I was in the park I took this picture looking back at the Markor building. My room was the 4th window from the right on the top floor.

  • One of the animals in the park.
  • One Thursday night a cold front came through with some rain, which cleared out the air the next day. These pictures are from my room and as you can see I would have had a very pretty view if it wasn't for the smog.

  • On Saturday April 30th, my other translator Rick invited me to go on an outing with him and some of his college friends. This weekend is their Labor Day weekend and they would get together each year and go into the mountains for a 'picnic'. It was cold and rainy day as we boarded the bus. It was a two hour drive into the mountains and I learned that the Chinese love to sing. Well since I can't sing, I had to tell them a story. The Story was a simple one about a wayward American traveler being taken on a picnic by his Chinese friends.
  • No one was exempt from singing, not even the kids.
  • Once you get out of the city, it gets rural, very rural.
