Urumqi

Well here are pictures from my 3 weeks in Urumqi China while I was there giving a Data Warehouse class to Markor Furniture. The class went very well and I had an opertoinity to experience a part of China that most westerners will never see. Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region which is the largest city in China's western interior with a population of about 2.5 million people. Ürümqi has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world as it is about 1,400 miles (2,500 km) from the nearest coastline.

On the last Thursday I thought it would be nice if I returned their hospitality so I asked them to join me for dinner at one of the two western restaurants in Urumqi. It was an Italian restaurant run by an Italian and it was great. The only problem was they wouldn't let me pay!

  • Dinner anyone?
  • This was my 'western' breakfast. They don't have cereal, so I usually was given a egg, some type of bread and some type of salad. Usually the drink was either pomegranate juice which you see here, or tomato juice.
  • This was the last day of class and these were 3 of my students along with my two translators.
  • Every time I would come back from lunch I would find them with there heads down. I was never sure if they were just tyried from lack of sleep or my teaching....
  • One of the translators, Rick likes to take pictures so he grabbed my camera and took one of me.
  • Here is a picture of Miki, my other translator and the person who took me to the 'Big Buddha' shrine.

  • This is James. He works for Markor, but use to work for one of our customers in the US that went out of business during the recession. James was a great person, and I still don't know how he does it as he is married and his wife stays in the US. On second thought, maybe that’s the secret (just kidding dear).
  • A closing picture of their IT people, my students and translators.
  • This was my home for 3 weeks. It wasn't bad other than it needed a good cleaning and the beds are hard. I would rank it about like a motel 6.
